Religious Education

Religious Education at St Paul's

Religious Education is taught according to the Buckinghamshire Agreed Syllabus and Oxford Diocesan Board of Education Scheme which, in turn, reflects the Church of England Statement of Entitlement.

In the Foundation Stage children are given opportunities for spiritual and moral dimensions through the Early Learning Goals. Their learning can be through both separate and cross-curricular themes which include: belonging, important experiences, celebrations in their own families, and celebrations of other people in the community.  They share religious stories using story sacks to enhance their learning.

At Key Stage 1 pupils will study Christianity and Judaism in depth. Other religions will be referred to. Themes include: belonging, special places, stories, leaders, and how the story of creation differs in Christianity and Judaism.  The curriculum begins with a big question and all RE lessons reflect this question.

At Key Stage 2, pupils study Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Humanism.  The curriculum is taught through the Oxford Diocesan Board of Education Scheme, each half term a big question is considered and explored to develop the children's religious literacy and their knowledge of worldviews.

Right to Withdraw

We understand that parents and carers may hold personal beliefs regarding Religious Education (RE). As outlined in the Education Act 1996 and the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, parents and carers have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE.

If you are considering this, we kindly ask that you discuss your decision with your child’s class teacher. This will give us the opportunity to share information about the RE curriculum, understand your concerns, and make appropriate arrangements for your child during the time they are withdrawn.

If you have any questions about the RE curriculum or wish to request a withdrawal, please contact the school office to arrange a meeting with your child’s class teacher or a senior member of staff.
